Orthodontics (from Greek orthos "straight or proper"; and odous "tooth") is the specialty of dentistry that is concerned with the study and treatment of malocclusions (improper bites), which may be a result of tooth irregularity, disproportionate jaw relationships, or both
Reason of dental and facial problems:
Most malocclusions are inherited, but some are acquired. Inherited problems include crowding of teeth, extra or missing teeth, cleft lip and palate and a wide variety of other irregularities of the jaws and face.
Acquired malocclusions can be caused by thumb or finger sucking, tongue thrusting, the airway being restricted by tonsils and adenoids, dental disease or premature loss of primary or permanent teeth.
Ideal age for the treatment:
Though 12 years of age may be the ideal age to begin Orthodontic treatment, the treatment can very well be done in older individuals with equal results. The Orthodontic treatment can be done till the age of more than 50 years as long as the condition of the bone surrounding the teeth is healthy.
